Medication Administration

We take our job very seriously when it comes to administering any medication. As a family, you are more familiar with the participants’ prescriptions than we are. Here’s how you can help us ensure there are no mistakes:

Authorization to Administer Medication:
    • We will only administer medication when it is accompanied by an Medication Administration Authorization Form, which will include the name of the medication, the dosage,  and the time. The name of the medication must match the form.
    • A copy of the Medication Administration Authorization Form can be downloaded here

    Presentation of Medication:

    • When you arrive at the activity, all medications must be presented to staff in the original issued bottle (vial), bubble pack, or pharmacy envelope.
    • All medications must have a proper pharmacy-issued prescription label. We will not administer anything contained in personal dosettes, Ziploc bag, or other means unless it is the original vial, bubble pack or pharmacy-issued envelope.
    • Members who require an asthma inhaler, an EPI-Pen or emergency medication will need to be readily available in the event of an asthma or anaphylactic attack. Asthma inhalers, epinephrine or emergency medication can be kept in the activity's medication bag or in the member's bag provided the bag goes with the member and is kept out of the reach of other members.
    • If the date on the label has expired, AAFS will inform the parent that we cannot administer the medication to the participant.

    Non-Prescription Medications:

    • For non-prescription or over-the-counter medications such as vitamins, supplements, or pain relievers must be in their original manufacturer's container with clear dosage instructions.
    • If the date on the label has expired, AAFS will inform the parent that we cannot administer the medication to the participant.
We will not administer any medications (prescription or non) that arrive in a ziploc bag, or personal dosette.

Your partnership in following this medication administration policy is sincerely appreciated as we strive to provide the best care for every child at AAFS.
