We offer two exciting opportunities to join stepping out: SOY and SOA (stepping out youth/adults)
Stepping Out is a recreation program for people on the Autism Spectrum with a focus on fitness!
We provide a high-intensity inclusive training environment to help empower our athletes form positive relationships with exercise and build lasting friendships with each other.
Workouts take place at University of Calgary gyms (thanks to the Kinesiology Faculty for their generous donation of gym space!) and the coaches in the program are AAFS staff as well as U of C Kinesiology practicum students. There is roughly a 1:2 ratio of staff/volunteers to athletes. We do circuit workouts, yoga, stretching, and sometimes sports like basketball and soccer within our workouts.
Hayley Wickenheiser started the program in 2011 with 5 participants, and we have grown to welcome groups of up to 20 young adults to our adult workout group and, for the first time in January 2016, we were pleased to offer an additional program that serves youth aged 12-17 years old.
We hope to break a sweat with you!
